Battle of Königsberg
6 Apr 1945 – 9 Apr 1945 · Königsberg
Encircled since late January 1945, the fortress city of Königsberg was stormed by the 3rd Belorussian Front from 6 April after days of bombardment. General Lasch surrendered the garrison on 9 April; Hitler sentenced him to death in absentia. The city, already devastated by RAF raids in August 1944, was later annexed by the Soviet Union and renamed Kaliningrad.
