At 7:48 a.m. Hawaiian time on 7 December 1941 Japanese carrier aircraft, under the command of Chūichi Nagumo, attacked the US Pacific Fleet at its Pearl Harbor base on Oahu. Four battleships were sunk and 2,403 Americans, military and civilian, were killed. The United States declared war on Japan the next day, 8 December.
