Emperor of Japan from 25 December 1926. An Imperial Conference sanctioned war against the United States, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands on 1 December 1941; historians agree he was involved to at least some degree, though the extent is disputed. He decided on surrender on 14 August 1945 and announced it by radio broadcast on 15 August 1945. He was not prosecuted by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, and renounced claims to divinity in January 1946.
