Sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff
30 January 1945 · Baltic Sea, off Stolpmünde (Ustka)
On 30 January 1945 the liner Wilhelm Gustloff, evacuating refugees and military personnel from Gotenhafen (Gdynia) during Operation Hannibal, was hit by three torpedoes from the Soviet submarine S-13. Of the more than 10,000 people aboard an estimated 9,400 died in the icy Baltic — the deadliest sinking in maritime history.
