Salerno landings (Operation Avalanche)
9 Sept 1943 – 16 Sept 1943 · Gulf of Salerno
The US 5th Army under General Clark landed in the Gulf of Salerno on 9 September 1943, the day after the Italian armistice was announced. Fierce German counter-attacks on 12–14 September nearly split the beachhead, which was held with naval gunfire and reinforcements. The Germans withdrew north on 16 September and Naples was entered on 1 October.
