Armistice of Cassibile — Italy leaves the Axis
3 Sept 1943 – 8 Sept 1943 · Cassibile, Sicily
Italy secretly signed an armistice with the Allies on 3 September 1943; it was announced on 8 September. Germany immediately disarmed Italian forces and occupied northern and central Italy, while the King and government fled south. Italy became divided between the Allied-supported Kingdom and the German-backed Italian Social Republic.
