Ruhr pocket

1 Apr 1945 – 18 Apr 1945 · Ruhr area

US armies advancing from the Remagen and Wesel bridgeheads met at Lippstadt on 1 April 1945, trapping Model's Army Group B in the Ruhr industrial area. The pocket was split and liquidated by 18 April; about 317,000 German soldiers surrendered, the largest capitulation on the Western Front. Field Marshal Model took his own life on 21 April.
