Capture of the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen

7 Mar 1945 – 25 Mar 1945 · Remagen, Rhine

On 7 March 1945 troops of the US 9th Armored Division found the Ludendorff railway bridge at Remagen still standing and seized it before German demolition charges could destroy it. Within ten days six divisions crossed to the east bank despite air attacks and V-2 strikes; the weakened bridge collapsed on 17 March. The surprise crossing undermined the German defence of the Rhine.
