Lapland War

15 Sept 1944 – 27 Apr 1945 · Lapland, Finland

The Lapland War, between Finland and Germany, ran from 15 September 1944 to 27 April 1945, when the last Wehrmacht troops left Finland. The Moscow Armistice of 19 September 1944 required Finland to break ties with Germany and remove German troops, and Finland began fighting on 28 September after Soviet pressure. Germany's withdrawal to Norway, Operation Birke, was expanded into Operation Nordlicht and involved demolitions and mines. German forces burned much of Rovaniemi before leaving it to the Finns on 16 October 1944. The result is listed as a Finnish victory; no formal peace treaty was signed with Germany.
