Gothic Line (Operation Olive)

25 Aug 1944 – 31 Dec 1944 · Gothic Line, northern Apennines

The Gothic Line was a German and Italian Social Republic defensive line across the northern Apennines, the last major line of defence directed by Field Marshal Albert Kesselring in Italy. Operation Olive, the Allied offensive, began on 25 August 1944 when the British Eighth Army attacked the outposts after crossing the Metauro. The Polish II Corps held the front on the Adriatic coast, with the 5th Kresowa Division in front and the 3rd Carpathian Division in reserve. The line was breached but the Germans retired in good order, and there was no decisive breakthrough until the final offensive of April 1945. The end date is approximate.
