Battle of Anzio (Operation Shingle)

22 Jan 1944 – 5 Jun 1944 · Anzio and Nettuno

The Allied VI Corps landed at Anzio on 22 January 1944 to outflank the Gustav Line and open the road to Rome. The beachhead was quickly sealed off and withstood heavy German counter-offensives in February. Only after the breakthrough at Monte Cassino did the Anzio force break out on 23 May, and Rome was liberated on 4 June 1944.
