Naval operation
Battle of the Denmark Strait
24 May 1941 · Denmark Strait
On 24 May 1941 the German battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen fought HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales in the Denmark Strait between Greenland and Iceland. Less than ten minutes after the British opened fire, a Bismarck shell struck Hood near her aft magazines and she exploded and sank within about three minutes; three of her crew survived. Prince of Wales's main armament malfunctioned and she broke off the engagement. Germany won a tactical victory, but Bismarck's damaged fuel tanks forced her to abandon the Atlantic breakout, and she was sunk on 27 May.
