Battle of the Kasserine Pass

19 Feb 1943 – 24 Feb 1943 · Kasserine Pass, Tunisia

From 19 to 24 February 1943 Axis forces led by Erwin Rommel, including the Afrika Korps Assault Group, the Italian Centauro Armored Division and two Panzer divisions from the 5th Panzer Army, attacked around Kasserine Pass in west-central Tunisia. Facing them were the US II Corps under Lloyd Fredendall, the British 6th Armoured Division and other parts of the British First Army. The Axis drove American forces back more than 50 miles, but reinforcements and heavy artillery halted them and by 24 February the Axis withdrew. It was the first major clash between US and Axis forces in Africa and led the US Army to overhaul its organisation, tactics and command.
