Vienna offensive
16 Mar 1945 – 15 Apr 1945 · Vienna
After repelling the last German offensive at Lake Balaton, the 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian Fronts broke through in western Hungary on 16 March 1945 and crossed into Austria. The assault on Vienna began on 2 April; the city was taken on 13 April after a week of fighting that spared most of its historic centre. Soviet occupation of eastern Austria followed.
