Liberation of Bergen-Belsen
15 April 1945 · Bergen-Belsen, Lower Saxony
British troops entered the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp on 15 April 1945 under a local truce. They found about 60,000 starving prisoners and some 13,000 unburied corpses; typhus and starvation killed a further 14,000 inmates in the following weeks. Films and reports from Belsen gave the British public its first direct view of the Nazi camps.
