Grossaktion Warsaw (deportations from the Warsaw Ghetto)

22 Jul 1942 – 21 Sept 1942 · Warsaw Ghetto, Umschlagplatz

The Grossaktion, the Nazi code name for the deportation and murder of Warsaw Ghetto Jews, ran from late July to 21 September 1942. Residents were assembled at the Umschlagplatz rail square, which the Nazis called 'resettlement to the East', and loaded onto overcrowded trains to Treblinka. The Judenrat leader Adam Czerniaków was told of the plan at a meeting on 22 July and died by suicide after learning of it, and in August the educator Janusz Korczak went with the deported orphanage children although he had been offered a chance to escape. The article gives an estimate of 254,000 to 265,000 people sent to Treblinka, while other accounts put the figure at 300,000 or more.
