Naval operation
Battle of Taranto
11 Nov 1940 – 12 Nov 1940 · Taranto
On the night of 11–12 November 1940, 21 Swordfish torpedo bombers from the carrier HMS Illustrious attacked the Italian fleet in its main base at Taranto. The battleships Conte di Cavour, Littorio and Caio Duilio were torpedoed and put out of action, halving Italy's capital-ship strength overnight. It was the first all-aircraft naval attack on a fleet in harbour.
