Armistice of 22 June 1940
22 June 1940 · Compiègne (Rethondes), France
France signed an armistice with Germany in the same railway carriage at Compiègne used for the 1918 armistice. Northern and western France came under German occupation; Marshal Pétain's regime, based in Vichy, governed the unoccupied south. In London, General de Gaulle called on the French to continue fighting.
